City are one of the teams chasing Wigan at the top of the table, but the Ashton Gate outfit are now at a respectful distance after Friday`s 1-0 defeat.
Nathan Ellington was the main focal point of Wigan`s attack, and he had a shot well saved by Stephen Phillips before beating the keeper only to see his effort rattle the post.
Scott Murray was always a threat for Bristol, and he saw John Filan make a fine low save to deny him.
Ellington carries a real threat and it came as no surprise that he had a hand in the goal.
His run on goal was halted by a clumsy foul by Matt Hall, and Kennedy made him pay on 50 minutes with a sublime curling free-kick that went over the wall before nestling in the corner of the net.
Danny Wilson`s men attempted to fashion an equaliser, but Jason De Vos marshalled the Wigan defence superbly to make sure the points went back to Wigan.
