Steven Howard had given The Hatters the lead just before the hour mark but Neil Roberts equalised for The Latics with 15 minutes left, as both sides took a share of the points in Lancashire.
Crewe failed close the gap on leaders Wigan after being held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Port Vale at Gresty Road.
Neil Sorvel had put Dario Gradi's men in front nine minutes after the break but Neil Brisco [pictured] equalised with 17 minutes remaining, as The Valiants stay just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Oldham Athletic failed to take advantage of The Railwaymen's slip-up, after being held to a 0-0 draw by Queens Park Rangers at Boundary Park.
Iain Dowie's men stay fifth and in the play-off places - as do Ian Holloway's QPR - who are two points clear of Tranmere Rovers in the last play-off spot.
Bristol City made the most of the slip-ups from those above them, with a 1-0 victory over struggling Peterborough United at Ashton Gate.
On loan Mark Robins scored the only goal of the match, as Danny Wilson's men are now three points behind Crewe for the second automatic promotion place.
Blackpool remain six points off the play-off places after coming from a goal down to draw 1-1 with Plymouth Argyle at Bloomfield Road.
Marino Keith gave Paul Sturrock's men the lead mid-way through the first half but five minutes before the break, Scott Taylor equalised to give The Seasiders a share of the points.
Wycombe Wanderers had the lead twice against struggling Barnsley but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at Adams Park.
Jermaine McSporran gave The Chairboys a 1-0 half-time lead but the visitors were able to equalised with 14 minutes left through Mike Sheron.
With eight minutes remaining, Wycombe went ahead through Roger Johnson but Bruce Dyer was able to make it 2-2 with four minutes left, to earn The Tykes a point.
Stockport County got two second half goals in the space of three minutes from Luke Beckett to overcome Brentford 2-1 at Griffin Park.
On loan striker Mickael Antoine-Curier opened the scoring for The Bees before Beckett netted his decisive brace.
Mansfield Town gave themselves a chance to avoid relegation following a 2-1 victory over Swindon Town at Field Mill.
Junior Mendes and a Wayne Corden penalty were enough to give Keith Curle's men all three points at home. Alan Reeves got the lone reply for the visiting Robins.
Notts County needed a late Mark Stallard goal to earn a 1-1 draw with Chesterfield at Meadow Lane.
Caleb Folan scored his first senior goal to give The Spireites an early 1-0 lead before Stallard's late strike meant a share of the points for both sides.
Colchester United took advantage of a sending off to Kevin Sharp just before half-time, as The U's defeated lowly Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Layer Road.
Sharp was dismissed five minutes before the break for foul and abusive language and the home side took advantage of the extra man in the second period, with Kemal Izzet and Scott McGleish scoring the late goals for Colchester.
In a relegation battle, Northampton Town remained at the foot of the Division Two despite a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Cheltenham Town.
Mark Yates had put Bobby Gould's side in front on the hour mark but Paul Harsley was able to earn The Cobblers a point, when he equalised with 15 minutes remaining.
