An important night for the title race saw second place West Brom facing an enormous test at home to third place Wigan.
After a gritty battle had kept the fans waiting for a goal West Brom's task looked even more tricky when they went behind after Lee McCulloch's cross was handled by Bernt Haas in the box and Andy Liddell slotted home on 73.
However, three minutes later the match swung completely back in Wigan's favour when Lee Hughes raced through and was felled by goalkeeper John Filan.
The goalkeeper was duly given his marching orders, with veteran Gary Walsh replacing the former Blackburn man, but the experienced custodian could not deny Hughes who powered home to the delight of the home fans.
With the momentum, and a numerical advantage, The Baggies went looking for a winner as the game opened.
With the game looking destined for a draw, Thomas Gaardsoe hooked home after Wigan failed to clear to make the gap to third a seemingly insurmountable 11 points, knocking Wigan a further point behind that in the process.
