A first half goal from Ben Chorley ended Wimbledon's 11-match losing streak and kept them alive in Division One for another week.
Defeat would have condemned Stuart Murdoch's men to the Second Division with six weeks of the season remaining, but they took the lead after only eight minutes before holding on for a shock success.
Chorley headed in from Jason Puncheon's corner to reward Wimbledon's bright start to the match and Wigan's lacklustre response did little to suggest they are heading for the play-offs.
Nathan Ellington grazed the crossbar after chasing a long ball out of defence and lobbing over keeper Scott Bevan and the Wigan striker then shot straight at Bevan from the edge of the area.
Jimmy Bullard fired too high from 18 yards as Paul Jewell's men looked for an equaliser, while Wayne Gray threatened at the other end, dragging a shot wide of goal.
Andy Liddell and Ellington once more came close for the home side and after Jason Roberts had been replaced by Lee McCulloch, Ellington once again missed the target.
Shola Oyedele could have doubled Wimbledon's advantage when he played a neat one-two with Gray, only to see his shot come back off a post.
There was still time for one more chance for Ellington, but his header from Liddell's corner was kept out by Bevan.
