Wigan found the perfect response to their shock home defeat by Wimbledon, as Nathan Ellington, Jason Roberts and Alan Mahon scored the goals to beat struggling Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.
Latics manager Paul Jewell was furious with his side's inept display at the weekend, but resisted the temptation to make wholesale changes, with only keeper John Filan coming into the team after suspension.
Filan proved his worth early on when he pushed aside Alan Pouton's drive, before Ellington thought he had scored an opener after Steve Banks parried Mahon's shot, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.
Ellington did get his 17th goal of the season on 33 minutes, lashing in a volley from close range after Jimmy Bullard's driven free kick had caused confusion in the home defence.
Nine minutes later it was two, Roberts spinning and slamming in a volley from six yards after being picked out by Andy Liddell's precise cross.
Liddell was then the provider for the third goal, another lovely delivery finding Mahon at the far post and he beat Banks with a powerful header.
The victory moves Wigan back into the play-off frame ahead of Friday's Sky Live trip to leaders Norwich, while Gillingham remain just two points above the relegation zone.
