Both sides are fighting to secure a place in the play-offs and the tension was evident as tempers frayed throughout the 90 minutes.
Wigan dominated play and were rewarded for their efforts with a goal from Nathan Ellington on the stroke of half time.
Ellington's goal owed a lot to luck as his shot took a wicked deflection and left Nico Vaesen with no chance in the Palace goal.
Tony Popovic should have levelled but headed wide from six yards, while Aki Riihilahti and Julian Gray also went close for the home side.
Palace continued to press after the break, with Gray and Mark Hudson both going close.
Andy Johnson hit a post, as Palace thought their afternoon would end in frustration.
However, the home side's pressure eventually reaped its reward when Danny Granville netted from close range.
It all got too much for Wigan, who saw striker Jason Roberts and Jason Jarrett dismissed in injury time as the game finished on a sour note.
