The 23-year-old bagged 24 goals last season and helped The Latics win promotion to The Premiership.
'The Duke' has just one year left on his current deal at The JJB Stadium and talks have now taken place regarding a possible new contract.
"My agent Tony Finnigan is speaking to them and hopefully we can get something sorted," Ellington told Sky Sports News.
Finnigan confirmed to skysports.com that talks have been held.
"We are in discussions and we were told we would wait for them to come back from pre-season training, but we have had dialogue with Paul Jewell," he said.
Ellington has reported back early for training following a shoulder operation, but he is confident of being fully fit for pre-season.
"It [his shoulder] should be 100 percent and I will be fit, the physio said everything is fine," added Ellington.
"All I need to do is get some movement back in my arm, I can still run, just no contact but the physio says I should be able to finish pre-season and play the last three games."
