Jewell has confirmed that talks are progressing over Portuguese defender Ze Castro, while they are also understood to be looking at Tranmere's Ryan Taylor.
Wigan are currently talking with Academica Coimbra about Ze Castro and Jewell is hopeful a deal can be concluded.
"At the moment discussions are ongoing," said Jewell.
"It's complicated but hopefully we can get it sorted out as he's a player we have been interested in for a while.
"He's a central defender and as everyone knows, that is one of the positions I want to strengthen before the start of the season."
Jewell is also thought to be pursuing a deal for Taylor, who is wanted by a host of clubs - including Everton and Norwich.
Everton have thus far failed to agree terms and now Wigan could step in and snap-up the highly-rated wing back.
One player who will not be arriving at The JJB Stadium is Algerian trialist Djamel Belmadi.
"We aren't signing him. He trained with us last Friday but that is all," said Jewell.
Jewell was pleased to hear that Nathan Ellington could yet stay at the club despite turning down their latest contract offer.
"We have made him a good offer and that's still on the table," he said.
"We will be delighted if he does sign because he is a big part of my plans for the forthcoming season.
"If he is happy, that's fantastic."
