Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell has put in an offer for an unknown player.Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell is waiting to learn if he has been successful in his latest bid to strengthen his squad.
Jewell is desperate to bolster his ranks ahead of Wigan's debut campaign in The Premiership and has already brought in four new faces.
The Latics have snapped up Ryan Taylor, Mike Pollitt, Pascal Chimbonda and Stephane Henchoz during pre-season but Jewell still wants further recruits.
He admits he currently has a bid in for an unknown player but has played down a swoop for Manchester City's troubled midfielder Joey Barton.
"We've targeted certain players and we have a bid in for one player just now," Jewell told Sky Sports News.
"We're expecting an answer, hopefully, some time today.
"I was linked with Barton because I was asked by a guy on the radio, basically, would I sign him. He put me on the spot.
"He's a good player, no doubts about that, but there are hundreds of good players out there.
"I don't know if he is available and I haven't give it a second thought. He may as well have asked me if I'm interested in Ronaldo. The answer's yes because they're good players."
One play who may catch Jewell's eye is Phil Neville, with the Manchester United utility man having been the subject of enquiries as his Old Trafford career appears close to an end.
Meanwhile, Jewell is confident that Nathan Ellington and Jimmy Bullard will be staying at The JJB Stadium.
He added: "I think they both want to sign, and we want them to sign, so I expect those deals to be done sooner rather than later."
