Wigan's Jason Roberts says he cannot wait to start the season against Chelsea.Wigan striker Jason Roberts says he cannot wait for the season to get started as the Premiership new boys start their campaign in style against champions Chelsea.
The Latics have endured a frustrating time of it over pre-season as they have struggled to secure their primary transfer targets, bringing in just Ryan Taylor, Stephane Henchoz, Pascal Chimbonda and Michael Pollitt as they look to acclimatise to life in the top flight.
Paul Jewell's side are amongst the hot favourites for the drop and will have to perform miraculously if they are to challenge that conception against The Blues on August 14.
However, despite the undoubted challenge ahead of his side, Roberts insists he cannot wait to get to grips with life in The Premiership.
"I guess it's different strokes for different folks, for me I'm excited by it, the defenders may not be feeling the same way but I'm definitely excited," Roberts told Sky Sports News.
"I'm looking forward to that game and not just that game.
"We will be judged over the season not just one game so we look forward to it definitely."
Fellow forward Lee McCulloch is also looking forward to the resumption of the Premiership campaign as he looks for The Latics to defy the doubters and make a strong case for survival.
"As soon as we came up I knew we were going to be big favourites to go back down, it just gives us an incentive to prove people wrong," said McCulloch.
Wigan boss Jewell has grown frustrated with his side being written off already in some quarters, and his Scottish hit-man says the playing staff have been similarly affected by the negative press they have received.
"So are the players [aggravated by criticism], so we'll just see what happens."
