Latics back in for Pep

Paul Jewell has not given up hope of taking Josep Guardiola to Wigan Athletic.

Paul Jewell has not given up hope of taking former Spain international Josep Guardiola to Wigan Athletic.

The Premiership newcomers were in talks with the veteran midfielder at the start of the month before the deal hit the buffers.

Latics boss Jewell felt agents' influence was behind the collapse of the transfer, with Guardiola available for nothing after a stint in the Middle East.

But, according to Jewell, there is still a chance of the 34-year-old moving to The JJB Stadium after talks were reopened.

"I have spoken to Guardiola twice recently and it might happen," said Jewell.

While Jewell is still looking to add to his squad with the capture of Guardiola, he has blocked any players leaving the club.

Derby County enquired about signing Emerson Thome on a loan basis, while Norwich City were interested in David Wright.

Jewell, though, feels he is not in a position to lose any members of his squad as he wants to ensure he has adequate cover.

"I have had approaches about a couple of my players but we've rejected all offers for the time being," said Jewell.

"We don't have the biggest of squads here to begin with and every player has a big part to play."
