Denny Landzaat hopes he has made the right choice in joining Wigan ahead of Espanyol.
Denny Landzaat is hoping he has made the right choice in joining Wigan Athletic ahead of Espanyol.
The Holland international has signed a three-year contract at The JJB Stadium after Wigan paid AZ Alkmaar £2.5 million.
The Latics fended off strong competition for the winger, with Espanyol having been favourites to land the 30-year-old.
Landzaat admits he spoke to the Spanish outfit, but was swayed by the ambition of Paul Jewell's Wigan.
"I spoke with Espanyol and they are also an ambitious club, while Barcelona is a nice place to stay, although the weather here is hotter at the moment!" said Landzaat.
"But sometimes you have a feeling, and mine was to make this choice, and it came down to the chat with the coach and the ambition of the club.
"There were other clubs who did not try as hard to sign me, unlike Wigan who really wanted me, and that was the main thing.
"For anyone who likes football, The Premiership is also the hardest competition with top clubs and top players. Every game is a big game."
Landzaat will have 14 - the number made famous by Johan Cruyff - on his shirt for next season and jumped at the chance to emulate the Dutch legend.
He added: "Everybody knows the number 14 in Holland was the number of Johan Cruyff. It's a special number.
"In club football in Holland we only play with one to 11, but here in England you have squad numbers so when I saw it was available, I took it.
"Now I hope it will be special for me because he was a great player."
