Jewell plays down McLeod link

Paul Jewell has dismissed speculation that he is ready to make a bid for Izale McLeod.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell has dismissed speculation that he is ready to make a bid for Milton Keynes Dons striker Izale McLeod.

The 22-year-old has already hit double figures this season and has been constantly linked with a move to a higher league club over the past few years.

A number of clubs are believed to be weighing up a January move, but Wigan have confirmed that they will not be one of those making an offer.

"I can put some of the stories of who we are meant to be buying to bed," Jewell told the Wigan Evening Post.

"I went to watch MK Dons when they played Farsley Celtic in the FA Cup as Farsley are one of the teams local to me, and their manager is an old mate of mine.

"But all of a sudden I'm linked with McLeod. You can forget McLeod."

Meanwhile, Jewell has hailed current front man Emile Heskey.

"Okay, he might not have 10 goals - but it goes a lot deeper than that," said Jewell.

"His work rate, and the unselfish work he does for others is very good - although sometimes he does too much.

"Sometimes you wonder if he could be a bit more selfish. Perhaps he needs to be like that, a bit more greedy at times.

"Sometimes you think `instead of looking for somebody, have a go yourself,' but that's the way he is. He is a team player, and I don't want to knock that out of him.

"I'm delighted with him - and I know the rest of the players and the staff are as well."
