Kirkland to face Gunners

Paul Jewell has confirmed Chris Kirkland is fit to start Wigan's game with Arsenal.

Paul Jewell has confirmed Chris Kirkland is fit to start Wigan Athletic's game with Arsenal, live on Sky Sports 1.

Kirkland was ferried to hospital on Saturday after taking a bang on the head during his side's 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough.

The keeper suffered a slight concussion after a collision with team-mate David Wright, but there appears to be no lasting damage.

And Kirkland is set to step straight back into the breach for Wednesday's Premiership clash with Arsenal at The JJB Stadium.

"Kirky's going to play, he's fit," Jewell told Sky Sports News. "Polly (Mike Pollitt) and (John) Filan are more than able deputies, but Kirky will play tomorrow.

"He's fine with it. I spoke to him on Sunday morning and Saturday night and he's fine.

"I'm not saying it was a storm in a teacup, it wasn't, but it's not serious, just a little concussion.

"The doctors have given him the all-clear and we wouldn't ask Chris to play if he wasn't 100 per cent certain medically fit and he is."
