Steve Bruce wants Antonio Valencia to chip in with more goals as Wigan look to stay in the top flight.

Winger has scored just once during Wigan career

Steve Bruce wants Antonio Valencia to chip in with more goals as Wigan Athletic look to stay in the Premier League. Valencia has yet to score for the Latics this season, with his only goal for the club coming in last term's 4-0 win over Manchester City. Wigan boss Bruce is a big admirer of the Ecuador international's ability, but is keen for the winger to show an eye for goal. Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post: "Valencia is an extremely talented player and when I arrived at this club I rated him as one of our best players.

Real threat

"He is vital to us, a real threat down the right, but the one thing we need to work on is his goalscoring. "You're looking for your wide players to chip in with five, six or seven goals a season, and that's what we would like from Valencia. "He maybe doesn't look as clinical as he could when he gets into a shooting position and that's something we can have a look at in training. "We know the lad is capable of scoring. How unlucky was he not to score against West Ham when his shot hit both posts?"
