Wigan manager Steve Bruce has warned injury-plagued keeper Chris Kirkland he is in danger of ruining his career unless he slows down.
The Latics boss told 27-year-old Kirkland he plans to take it easy with him over the coming months to ensure he does not do permanent damage to his back.
The former Liverpool stopper suffered back spasms in the warm-up against Chelsea last weekend, but Bruce expects him to be fit to face Hull City on Saturday after he was rested for Tuesday's 4-0 win over Notts County in the Carling Cup.
"I think we are going to have to pull in the reins a little bit because Kirky is a workaholic," said Bruce.
"He'll train from seven in the morning if you allow him to. With a bit of tender loving care he'll be fit to face Hull."
Kirkland, who signed a new contract to keep him at the JJB Stadium until 2012 in May, only played 24 Premier League games for Wigan last season, and Bruce is keen to take things slowly to make sure Kirkland can stay healthy.
