Loan star Emyr Huws insists his sole focus this season will be to help Wigan gain promotion to the Premier League, rather than looking to boost his hopes of one day making individual progress back at Manchester City.

The 20-year-old took part in City's pre-season tour of America before joining up with his new team-mates this week and is eager to prove his worth with the Latics after a successful stint at Birmingham last term.

"I'm really happy to be here," he told the club's official website. "As a person, I want to improve myself and I want to play as much as I can, but I've come to try and help the team to win and to get promotion - that's the main goal.

"I play in midfield but I can play further forward as a number eight and also as a holding midfielder to break up play and switch the ball. Long-range shots are a strength, I suppose. I scored a few when I was at Birmingham so hopefully I can do that here.

"I've spoken to the gaffer, he's very enthusiastic, he's very precise about what he wants me to do and he's explained that to me. The Championship is very competitive, there are a lot of teams pushing for the top and we're going to have to be at our best to make sure we get a good start to the season."

On a personal note, though, Huws does have his eye on securing a regular place in the Wales national team, having earned caps against Iceland and Holland earlier this year.

"If I can play here, play well and the team is winning then it's definitely going to help my chances with Wales," he continued. "The European Championships are coming up as well, so I want to make sure my chances are good for getting in that team."
