The Sheffield United striker was due to sign last week but the deal hit rocks when his back problem became an issue in the contract.
He returned to Bramall Lane and did not play in the 2-2 draw with Swindon but telephoned Trevor Francis to inform him that he would accept all the terms offered by the Blues.
He trained with the club this morning and signed a two-and-a-half year contract this afternoon.
The contract includes the option of a year`s extension, at Birmingham`s discretion, and will see the Blades receive £500,000.
Blues boss Francis said: `Marcelo made all the running by contacting me to tell me that after a lot of consideration he would sign the contract offered to him on Friday.`
He could be in line to make his debut in the Birmingham attack in Wednesday`s game against QPR.
