The Lisbon giants wrapped up a deal for the 24-year-old left back, which sees him join on loan with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
Fernando Couto and Sven Goran Eriksson recommended the Italian join the Portuguese side, with the former Under-21 international due to link up with his new team-mates at a training camp in Nyon.
Benfica coach Toni sought the advice of Couto and Eriksson, who had coached the player, before making his decision.
Piacenza defender Tramezzani, formerly with Tottenham, was believed to be heading the list of potential full back recruits, while Ullathorne has also been in negotiations with Benfica.
Indeed, Tramezzani had looked to have signed for the club, only for Benfica to decide his financial demands were too excessive.
"We did have lengthy talks with Benfica," confirmed Ullathorne's agent Justin Sumner to planetfootball.com. "But it's up in the air at the moment.
"We plan to go to a couple of clubs abroad and are waiting on a club in England."
Bastia and Servette are also in discussions with the out-of-contract Sheffield United defender but nothing has been decided with regards to the 29-year-old.
