On loan Arsenal striker Graham Barrett struck a post for Steve Coppell's side five minutes before half time, but that was as close as the hosts went despite dominating the game.
Danny Granville received his marching orders for Palace on 67 minutes but Trevor Francis's side defended well and they managed to hang on for a 0-0 draw to earn a point.
The draw will disappoint The Seagulls who were unable to capitalise on their superiority, although they do move out of the bottom three on goal difference.
Sheffield United's recent good run met strong resistance at Bramall Lane and were held to a 2-2 draw by a Gillingham side looking to bounce back from their mauling at Wolves on Saturday.
Steve Kabba gave The Blades the lead firmly against the run of play a minute before the break and Neil Warnock must have wondered how they went in ahead at half time.
Gillingham came back into the game in the second half and grabbed a deserved equaliser through Simon Osborn before going on to take the lead with Paul Shaw's 69th minute strike.
Warnock immediately threw on two substitutes and one of them, Paul Peschisolido, salvaged a point with his goal nine minutes from time to earn a point for the FA Cup semi-finalists.
United now look certainties for the play-offs but have surely seen their automatic promotion hopes fade, and they will now be eyeing a dream semi-final against FA Cup holders Arsenal at Old Trafford.
Norwich are still in with a shout of making the play-offs after recording a 1-0 win over Wimbledon at Carrow Road.
David Healy gave The Canaries the three points with a neat finish five minutes before half time that leaves Nigel Worthington's men level on points with rivals Ipswich Town, just five points outside the top six.
Claus Jorgensen again opened the scoring for Bradford as they travelled to Turf Moor to take on Burnley.
Substitute Arthur Gnohere saw red for the hosts two minutes from time and Andy Gray sealed the points by making it 2-0 for The Bantams a minute later.
