The First Division outfit will soon be in the market for goalkeeping cover and Bennett is one of the options being considered by Blades boss Neil Warnock.
With regular number one Paddy Kenny sidelined until the New Year, Warnock currently has Paul Gerrard on a three-month loan deal in South Yorkshire.
But Gerrard is due to return to Everton at the end of November and his exit will force Warnock to seek reinforcements from elsewhere, with Bennett a potential recruit.
"We have been looking at about 12 to 15 keepers at the moment," admitted Warnock.
"I can't say we have not spoken to Ian because we have, but we are keeping our options open."
Bennett is presently acting as back-up to Maik Taylor at Birmingham but may be amenable to the prospect of a temporary spell away from St Andrews.
With Nico Vaesen having recovered from a long-term knee injury, competition in the goalkeeping ranks at Blues will be fierce.
