Michael Tonge's goal on the stroke of half time was sufficient to earn The Blades the points after a dour tussle at Bramall Lane.
Neil Warnock's men dominated proceedings for the bulk of the contest with Brian Jensen being forced into saves from Tonge and Peter Ndlovu.
An early effort from Richard Chaplow, which was saved by Paul Gerrard, was the only real menace created by the visitors during the opening 45 minutes.
The only goal arrived on the cusp of half time when poor defending from Burnley presented coveted midfielder Tonge with the chance to slide the ball into an empty net.
After the break, Paul Peschisolido had a header saved by Jensen while Ashley Ward went close on a couple of occasions but could not find the second goal which would have wrapped up the points.
Burnley battled in vain but could not muster anything of great note with Gerrard on hand to deny Ian Moore in the second half.
