McAteer has been a target for The Blades following his release from fellow Championship side Sunderland at the end of last season.
A move to Leicester City collapsed earlier this month and the Republic of Ireland man is still searching for a club for the new season.
Blades boss Neil Warnock confirmed he has discussed a deal for the 33-year-old but is unwilling to meet the midfielder's demands at this juncture.
"Yes, I had a word with his people a while ago to see how the ground lay," Warnock told the Sheffield Star.
"I was interested to know what they were after. But it wouldn't be true to say that he is on the verge of coming here because that's not the case.
"You never know what might change from their point of view, especially as the start is fast approaching.
"Sometimes, though, I think agents and other people like to put this sort of thing in the papers to try and shake things up a bit. You get used to it."
Warnock also refuted suggestions that he is lining up a bid for Huddersfield Town defender Nathan Clarke, who has also been linked with Ipswich Town.
"I don't know where that came from. Nathan has never been recommended to me.
"Whenever I've spoken to Peter Jackson in the past, he's always told me that he's got a couple of great young players. I'm not sure where this came from."
