Neil Warnock's side have clicked into gear after a slow start to the season and held firm for a third successive clean sheet after Gray had given them the lead after just 17 minutes.
Rangers failed to effectively clear their lines and the United striker was on hand to turn in his third goal of the season after Jon Harley had helped on Alan Quinn's cross.
Jamie Cureton fired over the crossbar as the home side sought an immediate response, before the unmarked Marcus Bean headed wide from Gino Padula's cross.
Cureton then made a hash of a chance from close range after Lee Cook's mis-hit shot found him in space while at the other end, Ashley Ward was denied by Georges Santos' goal-line clearance.
Cook, signed in the summer from Watford, came close to scoring his first Rangers goal with a shot which deflected onto the bar shortly before the interval.
Harley should have doubled United's advantage only to blaze over from Gray's cross, before the visitors were pegged back into their own penalty area as Ian Holloway's side chased an equaliser.
Kevin McLeod's cross should have led to a goal, only for Kevin Gallen and Santos to get in each other's way, before Marcus Bignot squandered a glorious chance when he missed from six yards.
