Blades slaughter Rams

Sheffield United beat Derby County 1-0 courtesy of an Alan Quinn strike at Pride Park.

Sheffield United produced the only goal against Derby County to gain themselves a valuable victory at Pride Park.

Alan Quinn scored early in the second half with a driven shot from the edge of the box after the Derby defence had failed to adequately clear Derek Geary's cross.

It was the second consecutive match that the Republic of Ireland midfielder had scored in as Neil Warnock's men continued their renaissance.

The game started slowly and it was midway through the first half before either side produced a chance of note.

George Burley's team had the better of the low-key first half, Michael Johnson heading the best chance over the bar when well placed.

The Blades produced a much improved second half display, forcing some good work from Derby goalkeeper Lee Camp.

Inigo Idiakez hit the woodwork for The Rams with a well struck free kick but it was the visitors who broke the deadlock when Quinn struck after 61 minutes.

The home side applied pressure in the closing quarter, Paddy Kenny produced a fine save from another Idiakez free kick, but were unable to break the Yorkshire side's resolve.

The victory means Sheffield United move into seventh place in the table and bring an end to Derby's recent run of good form.
