The Trinidad & Tobago international missed a penalty, scored a goal and hit the woodwork, all before Chris Morgan and Andy Gray had given The Blades the points at Highfield Road.
Coventry were awarded a penalty on 14 minutes when Danny Cullip fouled Adie Williams while jostling for a corner but John's spot kick was saved by Ian Bennett.
John quickly recovered from that disappointment by steering The Sky Blues ahead on 18 minutes after Gary McSheffrey had nodded down Stephen Hughes' free kick.
The Coventry striker could have then put the hosts firmly in command but he was denied by the upright.
The visitors eventually responded just past the half hour mark as they drew level when Morgan finished off from Andy Liddell's cross.
Liddell was involved in The Blades' winner on 39 minutes as he played a short corner to Phil Jagielka, whose cross was turned in by Gray.
The Blades also enjoyed the better of the second half and Morgan was denied a second goal when his header struck the inside of the post.
