Lee arrived at Griffin Park from West Ham last summer, but his first season with The Bees was disrupted by a string of niggling injuries.
Allen has expressed a desire to keep the defender on Brentford's books, but the stopper could be lured away by the prospect of Championship football with The Blades.
"San Lee has been training with Sao Paulo in Brazil," Allen told the club's website. "I was informed yesterday that he will be going for a week's training with Sheffield United with a view to earning himself another contract.
"San Lee's season was interrupted constantly with injuries and I was hoping to have him back. But this is now looking unlikely. But we will see."
Allen also confirmed that keeper Stuart Nelson will not be available for the start of the new season after undergoing hernia surgery.
Nelson has carried the injury for some time, but was hopeful that a break over the summer would rectify the complaint.
However, the problem has failed to ease and the club have sent him for corrective surgery which is likely to sideline him for six weeks.
"Stuart Nelson saw a consultant surgeon regarding a small hernia problem he has had," added Allen. "It was an injury he carried at the end of last season which we hoped, with one month's rest, would clear up.
"Unfortunately the problem is still there and therefore yesterday evening Stuart had an operation which will keep him out for four to six weeks."
