Doncaster have abandoned their interest in Sheff Utd winger Nick Montgomery.Doncaster Rovers have abandoned their interest in Sheffield United winger Nick Montgomery.
The 23-year-old has been told he can leave Bramall Lane after not being offered a new contract.
But, due to his age, The Blades will be entitled to compensation with reports suggesting the Championship club want £400,000 for the wide man.
League One side Doncaster had been strongly linked with an offer for Montgomery and an enquiry was made by Rovers boss Dave Penney.
The figure quoted by his opposite number Neil Warnock was less than that reported but Penney concedes it was still too high for Doncaster.
"I had to laugh when I saw that because there is no way we would be offering that kind of money for any player," Penney told the Doncaster Free Press.
"We did enquire about him but we were miles apart with the valuation, which was actually less than the figure that has now been mentioned, and that's as far as it went."
Burnley, Stoke City and Leeds United have all been credited with an interest in Montgomery and it is likely he will stay in The Championship, rather than drop down a division.
