Neil Warnock swooped for Claude Davis, after Joleon Lescott joined Everton.
Manager Neil Warnock has revealed he swooped for Sheffield United new boy Claude Davis after Everton snapped up original target Joleon Lescott.
The Blades paid a fee of up to £3 million for 27-year-old Jamaica international Davis, but originally went in for Wolves defender Lescott.
Once The Toffees moved in for the former England Under-21 defender, the price soared to £5 million, and Warnock was forced to withdraw from the race.
"I watched Claude on several occasions over the last couple of seasons and am absolutely delighted to get him," the South Yorkshire boss told the club's website.
"He and Joleon Lescott were my number one targets, and when Lescott was beyond us, I concentrated on getting Claude.
"It was touch and go, a hard grind because other clubs were in for him, but I think we have done a good deal.
"It's a lot of money, but that is what you have to pay to get that sort of quality in."
Davis is still yet to receive a work permit to officially complete his transfer, but United believe the matter is a mere formality.
