Neil Warnock is hoping Michael Tonge will only miss Sheffield United's next two matches.
Tonge hurt his ankle during the early stages of his side's 2-0 defeat to Premiership champions Chelsea last Saturday.
He is due to undergo a scan on the injury later this week, once the swelling has subsided, and the club fear he has suffered ligament damage.
Blades boss Warnock is unsure how long the midfielder will be missing from his plans, but feels Tonge will be desperate to face Manchester United on November 18.
That would see the 23-year-old sit out the games with Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers, although Warnock is reluctant to make a firm prediction.
"Michael's ankle is very swollen, so I don't expect to see him back in action for a while," said Warnock.
"He could possibly miss the next three games, although I know he will be desperate to play against Manchester United."
