Michael Tonge is hoping Sheffield United can shock Premiership leaders Manchester United on Tuesday night.
The Blades boosted their survival hopes with a resounding 3-0 win over relegation rivals West Ham United on Saturday and head to Old Trafford in search of an upset.
Tonge, who was an apprentice with The Red Devils, accepts the odds are stacked against The Blades, but is keen to capitalise on any slacking off from the title favourites.
"On paper we shouldn't be able to compete with a team like that, but funny things happen in football at times, and we have to hope one of those things happens on Tuesday," said Tonge.
"Of course, we're underdogs, we're not expected to get any result, and no one is under any illusion we're going to go there, have a go at them and do this, that and the other.
"We just have to perform to the best of our ability, stay tight at the back, make sure we're not too gung-ho and see what happens.
"If we play to our maximum, they have an off day, you never know, and if you can't get up for Manchester United, then what are you doing in football?"
The midfielder also acknowledges it will be a 'special moment' to return to Old Trafford following his younger days at the club.
He added: "It's going to be a special moment for me. But it seems such a long time ago when I was there. I feel like I've been at Sheffield most of my life.
"It's still going to be a good occasion, one we've been looking forward to all season, and hopefully we can go there and do well.
"I just have to hope the gaffer picks me."
