Southampton beat the transfer deadline to sign Sheffield United defender Chris Lucketti on loan until the end of the season.
The deal was struck on the stroke of 5pm on Thursday as the final loan transfer window of the season was due to close and it was therefore necessary to obtain the approval of the Football League.
Lucketti's switch to St Mary's stalled because the 36-year-old accompanied his wife to hospital as she required an operation.
And while Saints manager Nigel Pearson is delighted to have landed Lucketti, who will stay at his wife's bedside before joining his new team-mates next week, he also acknowledges the centre-back's decision.
"It has been a difficult situation for Chris who wanted to come but obviously his main concern was his wife," Pearson told Southampton's official website.
"It has been a difficult time for him but it is right that he stays with his wife this weekend and then he will join up with us next week."
And Pearson believes Lucketti will add vital experience as 19th-placed Southampton bid to avoid Championship relegation.
"I am delighted that everything is okay and that he is able to join us as he will add further experience and cover to our defence for the run-in," added Pearson.
"It is a relief that it has gone through and I am pleased to get another experienced player with leadership qualities for what is going to be a very important run in for us.
"He is a strong character who knows the division inside out and will add know-how and options for us."
