St James' Park legend predicted to succeed

A host of Newcastle United players have revealed the uplifting impact Alan Shearer has had at St James' Park since arriving as manager. The former Magpies and England captain has agreed to replace Joe Kinnear on an eight-game basis while the ex-Wimbledon boss recovers from heart surgery. Newcastle are fighting against Premier League relegation and Shearer begins a tough run-in, which includes meetings with Liverpool, North-East rivals Middlesbrough, and Aston Villa, at home to Chelsea on Saturday. But having experienced training under the 38-year-old on Thursday and Friday, the Tyneside squad are confident about their chances of survival. Defender Sebastien Bassong told Sky Sports News when asked about Shearer: "I knew him as a great player, I have seen him on the TV. "It is a good thing. We need a manager and we will see what can happen."

Important

Habib Beye added: "The most important thing is to win the game. It is a big game for Newcastle but I think everybody will enjoy this game." Meanwhile, Jose Enrique is confident Newcastle can record a positive result at the weekend after holding the title-chasing Blues to a goalless stalemate earlier in the season. "We have a difficult game," said the full-back. "But in the last game at Stamford Bridge we drew and I think we can win this game. "All the players want to show their qualities because we have a new manager." Centre-back Edgar added about Shearer: "He is a legend and we are happy to have him as a manager. "It is going to be a tough run-in. We know the position we are in but we are excited about Saturday and hopefully we can get a good result."
