The Blades have struggled for firepower this season, finding the target just 41 times in 40 Sky Bet League One fixtures.
With their defensive record a match for most of those in the top-half of the division, it has been issues in the final third which have held them back.
Clough is aware of that fact and will look to address it as a matter of urgency when the transfer window re-opens.
He concedes that he will be looking for 'three or four quality players', but has pointed out that a new marksman will be at the top of his wish list.
Clough said in the Sheffield Star: "Bringing in a striker is something we'll consider.
"They're the hardest to get and cost the most money but, yes, it's something we're investigating."
After a slow start, which led to Clough inheriting the managerial reins, the Blades have moved steadily up the third tier table.
A late play-off push appeared to be on the cards at one stage, to complement a run through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but an eight-point gap and five places now separate United from the top six and attention is starting to turn towards next season.
Clough added: "Hopefully we'll be up there in the top six in 12 months' time, or even challenging for the top two. We want to do well."
