The 27-year-old made over 250 appearances for the club before leaving to join Blackpool in 1999 and he has now been released by Charlton Athletic after a brief spell in the Premiership.
Carlisle spokesman Steve Trafford commented: "Tony Caig is a name which has been mentioned by Ian Atkins and he is considering looking at him, but we do not know what his personal terms will be."
Lincoln City are hopeful that long-term casualties Grant Brown and Richard Logan will be back in action sooner rather than later.
"Grant is coming on great guns," said Imps coach Stevie Welsh. "He's running and jumping and doing everything but kicking a ball.
"Richard is coming along slowly. I wouldn't think he'd be back for pre-season but he could be back in October or sometime thereabouts."
Young Rochdale goalkeeper Matthew Gilks will put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract next week.
"After discussing the offer made to me at the end of last season I'm happy to say I'll be signing a new contract," he told the club's official site.
Mansfield's Adam Barrett has undergone further surgery on a troublesome ankle injury, with the club confident that the latest operation will clear the problem up.
"He should be returning to pre-season training around the middle of July," said a club spokesman.
