21-year-old MacDonald has only recently returned from a temporary spell at Torquay United, and Addicks boss Alan Curbishley is keen for him to get more first team action.
The move is the latest in the link between the two clubs that has already seen Kemal Izzet and Anthony Allman move from The Valley to Layer Road last season.
U's boss Steve Whitton is delighted to have MacDonald on board to bolster his Division Two outfit.
"Charlie is a sharp little player who gives us attacking options," said Whitton.
"As well as playing up front he can also play on either flank so will come in handy with Graham Barrett out injured."
Barrett has since returned to his club Arsenal after injuring knee ligaments in Saturday's match at Wycombe and will not return before the end of the Division Two season on April 20.
Meanwhile, Watford defender James Panayi has joined The U's on trial with a view to a permanent switch.
The 22-year-old has been at Vicarage Road for all of his career but has failed to make an impression on the first team, making just 11 appearances for The Hornets.
