Powell is a free agent in the summer but wants to extend his stay at The Valley as long as he feels he is able to perform at the highest level.
With Paul Konchesky coming on in leaps and bounds this season and earning his first England cap earlier this month against Australia, the young left back looks set to fill Powell's shoes at the end of the season.
However, the former England defender has spent five years in South London with The Addicks and has firmly established himself as a fan favourite and has been in fine form himself, forcing Alan Curbishley to operate Konchesky in midfield.
He said: "I'm about to sort out my situation in the next couple of weeks, when the chairman gets back from holiday.
"I don't know what will be on offer and I will see what they have to say but I want to be part of this club for as long as I can.
"The run we are having is outstanding and at the moment we overcome any obstacle in our way.
"As you get older you savour it more and to be part of it is great."
