Danny Murphy says his improved fitness is the key to his upsurge in form.Danny Murphy says his improved fitness is the key to his upsurge in form.
The former Liverpool man admits that he had to work on his fitness after arriving at Charlton, and says that his hard work is now starting to pay off.
Alan Curbishley pointed out that the £2.5 million signing needed to get into shape and Murphy admits that he is benefiting from his improved fitness.
"I feel much stronger now and I have to give a lot of credit to the fitness guys at Charlton for the way my form has picked up," said Murphy.
"I had to shed a few pounds when I first signed and I've continued to work hard on my stamina and physical well-being.
"I've never doubted my ability but I've always had to keep on top of the physical part of my game, as some players have to.
"Some are lucky - they don't have to work at it.
"Look at Steven Gerrard. He comes back after two months out and looks like he has never been away.
"I can't do that, but I've put in a lot of hard graft to get into shape. And because I'm right physically and I'm a bit more settled with my family having moved down from Liverpool, it is showing on the pitch."
Murphy was targeted by the boo-boys after his arrival at The Valley, but he is now starting to show some of his old form- and would love a goal to show for his efforts.
"I've been as inconsistent as the team this season but, for the last month or so, I've started to feel really good.
"I just need a goal now. I can't seem to score for love nor money."
