Young to sign on soon

Charlton Athletic expect club captain Luke Young to sign his new contract shortly.

The England international appeared resigned to leaving The Valley earlier this summer after expressing his frustration at a lack of progress regarding a new deal.

He was wanted by London rivals West Ham United and reports suggested a transfer was close to completion.

The Addicks knocked back the rumours and offered Young a three-year contract in a bid to hang on to the full back.

New manager Iain Dowie revealed earlier this month that the former Tottenham defender had agreed to ignore interest from elsewhere to skipper the team next season.

Addicks chairman Richard Murray is happy with Young's decision and feels the contract extension will be signed in the near future.

"Luke's the captain," Murray told Sky Sports News.

"Obviously there was some sniffing from West Ham, but that didn't go through.

"We are talking to him about a new contract and we're really pleased with him."
