Souleymane Diawara has explained why he chose to Charlton over Rangers.
Souleymane Diawara has revealed that he came close to signing for Rangers but chose Charlton because he wants to make a name for himself in The Premiership.
The Addicks beat off competition from numerous other clubs last week to secure the Senegal international from Sochaux for £3.7 million.
Having originally leaned towards Rangers, Diawara has now explained that his mind was finally made up by new Charlton boss Iain Dowie.
"It is true that I was very close to signing for Rangers," he admitted.
"But at the last moment, Charlton showed an interest. The coach was very convincing. I have been attracted by his words.
"Moreover, the English league is of a better level. If I had moved to Scotland it would have been with intention of moving to England later on.
"Sochaux didn't force me to choose Charlton, I made the decision all alone.
Diawara is now hoping to establish himself in the side and help Charlton move up the table.
"I want to be in the first team for each match. I want to show I have the level to play in the Premier League," he explained.
"On a collective level, we aim first to recover (from a poor start). Then we will see if we can achieve better results."
