Iain Dowie has confirmed that Charlton were in the race to sign Diego Tristan.
Charlton Athletic chief Iain Dowie has confirmed that The Addicks were in the race to sign Diego Tristan before the striker opted to join Real Mallorca.
The experienced Spaniard was released by Deportivo La Coruna on September 1 and immediately attracted interest from The Premiership and his home country.
Before Tristan signed for the Balearic Island club, Bolton boss Sam Allardyce set out his stall to try and convince the 30-year-old a move to The Reebok Stadium was in his best interests.
Newcastle United were also rumoured to be keen at the time, and now Addicks boss Dowie has revealed that the London side were very much in the frame before Tristan decided on Mallorca.
"We had some discussions with his representatives, but it was just one of those things," said Dowie in The News of the World.
"Real Mallorca have got an excellent free transfer."
