Wycombe shock sorry Addicks

Wycombe heaped more misery on Charlton as they claimed a famous 1-0 win.

League Two Wycombe heaped more misery on Les Reed and Charlton as they claimed a famous 1-0 victory in their Carling Cup quarter final clash at The Valley.

Wanderers, who had already dispatched of Premiership Fulham in this season's competition, were highly impressive throughout and nobody could argue with them claiming their place in the last four.

Wycombe are no strangers to cup shocks having reached the last four of the FA Cup in 2001, but this is the first time in their history they have claimed a place in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

Charlton boss Reed made seven changes to his side for the game, but his starting XI was still full of big names - including the likes of Darren Bent, who captained the side, Marcus Bent and internationals Amdy Faye and Dennis Rommedahl.

Scott Carson was also back in the side and he was largely responsible for making sure his side were just 1-0 down at half time, as he produced a string of great saves to keep his side in the game. The first of which came 11 minutes in.

Souleymane Diawara was harshly adjudged to have handed the ball on the edge of the box and Wycombe almost capitalised as Mike Williamson unleashed a ferocious free-kick, but Carson just about managed to palm the ball clear.

It was Easter who unleashed an effort 25 yards out which looked to be dipping in until Carson again was there at full stretch to save.

Tommy Mooney was next to test the on-loan goalkeeper who could not have imagined he would be in for such a busy evening,

On 35 minutes, though, even Carson was helpless to turn away Wycombe again as The Chairboys took a thoroughly deserved lead.

Mooney was the provider as he sent Easter clear, the striker took the ball to the edge of the box before firing into the corner - to the delight of the plus 3,000 Wycombe fans amassed behind Carson's goal.

The goal spurred Charlton into some action and for the first time Wycombe keeper Jamie Young was called into action as he claimed a chance from Diawara shot as the Senegalese star failed to connect fully to a cross.

Dennis Rommedahl saw a volley sail just wide before Marcus Bent almost levelled with the last chance of the half.

Charlton, seemingly with Reed's voice ringing in their ears, were quick out of the traps and Bryan Hughes had the first chance of the second period but his 25-yard effort was never really troubling Young.

The Premiership side were beginning to control possession but the chances were still not flowing.

Faye wasted a good chance when well placed on the edge of the box but he scuffed his shot wide of the mark

Matt Holland, Lloyd Sam and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink were all introduced with 20 minutes left as Reed spurred his side on to claim the equaliser

The substitutions failed to make a real impact albeit a couple of long range efforts, and indeed Wycombe could have extended their lead late on - but late touches from Easter and Betsy let them down.

The final whistle sent the visiting fans into raptures as they hailed the achievements of Paul Lambert's men - but their cheers were drowned out by the boos of the home fans, who were left furious at the shock exit of their sorry side.
