It is understood that the 29-year-old was told by Hammers boss Harry Redknapp that he is free to have discussions with Wilson over a possible move to Ashton Gate.
Wilson made a bid for striker Richard Creswell, from his former club Sheffield Wednesday, however the bid fell through because of a contractual problem.
Kitson has been involved in transfer moves that have totalled £6 million during his career, having been at Leicester City, Derby County, and Newcastle United, before joining The Hammers in February 1997.
West Ham have been known to be wanting to off-load fringe players to reduce their wage bill, a bill which even recently forced Harry Redknapp to pull out of signing Swindon Town's Australian star Danny Invincible.
