Neil Lennon and Keith Gillepsie have both been forced to withdraw from the Irish squad, meaning that McCann may be given a chance on the bench for the game against Malta.
McCann is by no means even a regular substitute for The Irons, but the promising youngster appears to have come through his injury-hit early career and has featured for the Northern Ireland Under-21 side.
It was to the youth side that McCann was originally called up, but he will be buoyed by the decision to promote him into the senior squad.
Norwich duo Phil Mulryne and Paul McVeigh have been forced to drop out of the squad with injury.
Mulryne suffered a recurrence of his groin problem, while McVeigh bruised his foot in last week's defeat to Preston.
