Lucchini reveals Hammers talks

TERNANA defender Stefano Lucchini has revealed that West Ham are trying to bring him to England.

The Italian Under-21 international, who played in the recent championships in Switzerland, has already had talks with The Hammers but Brescia, Como and Udinese are all keen to keep him in his homeland.

Torino have also been previously linked with a bid for the player.

With young hot-shot Massimo Maccarone joining Middlesbrough, there is real concern that some of the Azzurri's brightest talents are being lost to the Italian game.

A move does seem likely for the 21-year-old, even though he is under contract until 2005 at Castelnuovo, after Ternana's failure to earn promotion last season.

"I have already had some talks with West Ham this winter," said the former Cremonese centre back.

"The contact has been renewed recently through my agent.

"My objective remains, however, to wear the shirt of a club that plays in the top league because I want to make that final jump up in quality.

"I want to go to a team that has confidence in me. Whether it is English or Italian has little importance.

"No team is favourite to sign me. There is no one club with more advantage in order to acquire me.

"For the moment, I have the same percentage to play with the four teams who have contacted me."
