The Portuguese international is set to leave Fiorentina after the club's relegation from Serie A, with the cash-strapped Viola looking to get Gomes off their wage bill.
The former Benfica star has been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham in the past as well as a return to his native Portugal.
Roeder admitted that he had been an admirer of the player at Euro 2000, but that no move had been made for Gomes.
"He is just one of those players we have been linked with," Roeder told the club's official website. "All I would say is that two years ago when I saw a lot of him in the European Championships in Holland and Belgium he looked like an outstanding goalscorer.
"That is why Fiorentina paid so much money for him, and obviously they have had their problems in the last couple of years which hasn't helped Nuno's cause.
"Two years ago he looked a hell of a goalscorer.
"But, again, it is just one of those players that has been linked with us before we have even thought about making a move."
