The midfielder had been on loan to the Whaddon Road outfit since October, with his current spell due to expire in early January.
However, Hammers boss Glenn Roeder has decided to recall both McCann from The Robins and Glen Johnson from his loan spell at Millwall as cover for the busy holiday fixture period.
McCann, though, will be unavailable for three matches to the Upton Park side because of a red card he received while playing for Cheltenham.
On the loss of McCann, Cheltenham Town boss Graham Allner told the club's official website: "Obviously it's disappointing to lose Grant as we were hoping to have him for at least two games over the Christmas period.
"But with West Ham short of players at the moment, they have called him back and there is nothing we can do about it.
"It's a blow to lose a good player from the squad but we will now have to look at what other options are available."
