Rahim had been on a six-month loan deal at Upton Park from Levski Sofia, after impressing Hammers manager Glenn Roeder in a summer trial.
But the 24-year-old was unable to force his way into the Hammers' team and Roeder confirmed the midfielder was heading to Kenilworth Road.
"We have let Brent Rahim go to Luton and we are very hopeful they will give him a contract until the end of the year," Roeder told the club's official website.
"If he can secure a contract he will play first team football which he needs to do."
The Hammers also confirmed that young midfielder Leon Britton would stay at Swansea until the end of the season.
Britton joined the Third Division basement club in mid-December and, with his contract up at the end of the season, is unlikely to return to Upton Park.
"Leon's contract runs out in the summer so thereafter he will be a free agent," said Hammers secretary Peter Barnes.
