Harewood was hauled off after just 28 minutes of the 2-0 reverse at The Madejski Stadium on Saturday after being forced to play in midfield.
The 24-year-old, who has been in fine form since his move from Nottingham Forest last November, was furious with his early exit from the match.
He trudged off the pitch and voiced his displeasure at the decision to Hammers boss Pardew before taking his place in the dugout.
Pardew, who was returning to Reading for the first time since leaving the club in acrimonious fashion last September, was upset with Harewood's actions and has told the forward he must learn to show more respect.
"We were in trouble and I felt we needed another midfielder in there who could win balls and tackles," said Pardew.
"I expect anybody who gets subbed in such a short time to be disappointed but Marlon had done this sort of thing before.
"He needs to show a bit more respect when he comes off the pitch, not only to me but to the player replacing him.
"But it was an emotional day for everybody and Marlon's still a young lad.
"He's been brilliant this season but this time he was the victim of a tactical decision."
