The Irons boosted their promotion hopes with a victory against high-flying Sunderland in front of disgruntled Black Cats supporters.
The match hinged on the dismissal of Stephen Caldwell - with Marlon Harewood and Teddy Sheringham both on target after their hosts were reduced to ten men.
Carl Fletcher had rattled a post in the opening exchange, whilst at the other end, Stephen Bywater produced a fine save to deny Darren Carter.
Sergei Rebrov clashed with Caldwell five minutes before the break, and in the ensuing melee, the Sunderland defender was dismissed for shoving the Ukrainian, who was not even booked for his part in the incident.
The extra man proved crucial for West Ham, who subsequently took the lead when Luke Chadwick escaped down the right and played in Harewood - who slotted home with aplomb.
George McCartney thought he had levelled with an audacious 30-yard lob, but the crowd looked on in disbelief, as it dropped the wrong side of the post.
As Sunderland committed men forward, it was West Ham who wrapped things up in the closing stages - with Sheringham benefiting from Bobby Zamora's unselfish pass to grab a late second.
